Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR)

The Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) technique is a widely used method for measuring the rate at which oxygen gas permeates through a material, typically packaging films or sheets. This technique is crucial in industries where oxygen exposure can lead to product degradation or spoilage, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.
The working principle of the OTR technique involves sealing the sample material between two chambers, one containing oxygen and the other initially devoid of oxygen. A coulometric sensor is used to measure the amount of oxygen that passes through the sample material from the oxygen-rich chamber to the oxygen-depleted chamber over a specific time period. The rate at which oxygen permeates through the material is then calculated and expressed as the Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR), typically in units of cm³/(m² × day).

- High sensitivity: The coulometric sensor used in OTR testing is highly sensitive, allowing for accurate measurement of even low levels of oxygen transmission.
- Versatility: The technique can be applied to a wide range of materials, including flexible films, rigid plastics, coatings, and laminates.
- Standardized testing: Well-established testing standards, such as ASTM D3985 and ASTM F1927, ensure consistent and reliable results across different testing facilities.
- Shelf-life prediction: The OTR data obtained can be used to predict the shelf-life of oxygen-sensitive products, enabling better product design and packaging selection.
Minimum sample size of 12 cm x 12 cm is recommended.
