Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)
The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method stands as a cornerstone technique in materials science and engineering. It delves into the realm of surface area analysis, providing crucial insights into the hidden landscapes of porous materials.
To determine the surface area using BET method, the sample is first cooled to cryogenic temperature. The BET method utilizes nitrogen gas adsorption at cryogenic temperatures. The sample is degassed first, then exposed to controlled N2 pressure variations. As pressure increases, more N2 molecules cling to the material’s surface. The amount of adsorbed gas is measured at different pressures, creating an isotherm. This isotherm reflects the relationship between the relative pressure (P/P⁰) and the amount of gas adsorbed. By applying the BET equation (a mathematical model) to the isotherm data, the specific surface area of the sample is calculated. The BET equation essentially analyses the monolayer-multilayer adsorption behaviour of Nitrogen molecule on the sample’s surface.
